Why Your Next Marathon Should be a Marathon Adventure
On a morning during the last South American summer I rode in the bed of a pickup truck along a rocky road with snowy mountains in the distance. We passed a Chilean neighborhood, a Russian neighborhood, and a Chinese neighborhood. We passed a group of penguins in a frigid bay. It was sunrise, and there was a full moon. I jumped out of the truck at the top of a small rise, just beyond a sandy spot on a natural beach where a sea lion sunned herself all morning. I took out my clipboard, camera, and radio. I was in Antarctica, working a marathon.
What is Marathon Adventures?
I work as Adventure Director for Marathon Adventures, a twin-cities based specialty travel company that brings running enthusiasts to the farthest reaches of the globe to run Marathons, Half Marathons and Ultra races. We combine tourism and running into an unforgettable 7-10 day adventure. Our White Continent Marathon Adventure is coming up in January and we still have a few spots left!
Marathon Adventures is one of the only companies with the resources to stage a marathon in Antarctica. We are the only company that currently does not have a waiting list for our Antarctic marathon and also the only company that flies to Antarctica rather than sailing. Sailing is more time-consuming, significantly more expensive, and the Drake Passage is known for rough waters. Flying gets us there comfortably and efficiently, in less than 3 hours.
Types of Trips
We offer a ten-day itinerary starting at the southern tip of the world in Punta Arenas, Chile on January 25, 2014. The highlight of the trip is the White Continent Marathon, Half Marathon, or 50K on King George Island, Antarctica. Second best is the Punta Arenas Marathon, Half Marathon and 50K which take place along the Straits of Magellan. That’s right – everyone gets to race on 2 continents within the same 10 days!
With Punta Arenas as our base, we also explore the natural penguin colony at Magdalena Island, the stunning Patagonian national park Torres Del Paine, and quaint Punta Arenas itself, a gateway to Antarctica.
The rugged terrain, unforgettable scenery, and blissful euphoria of running your goal race at the bottom of the world all combine to make our White Continent Marathon Adventure a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. On our trip, you’ll make lifetime friends from all over the world because Marathon Adventures’ clients are some of the coolest and most fun people you could meet. There is no substitute for this kind of adventure – we guarantee it!
