Unleash the SHE: A Race by the Numbers
Every year, new races emerge with wild themes, unique courses, and quirky medals. We love sharing these events with Minnesota runners looking for fresh races to add to their running resumes. Yet, each year we also return to many of our favorite charity races that are near and dear to our hearts. Over the past few years, we’ve shared details of Unleash the SHE events in Minnesota and given you reasons to run, featuring everything from an inspirational runner’s story in 2016 to quotes from researchers and race organizers in 2015.
In 2017, we’re focusing on the numbers that highlight the importance of Unleash the SHE.
ONE great cause
Unleash the SHE is a women’s race series, presented by Mayo Clinic and organized by Final Stretch. Unleash the SHE events are a celebration of women, provide important funding and support to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance.
Sometimes an exciting and enticing race conflicts with something on your calendar, forcing you to wait until the following year to participate. Fortunately, Unleash the SHE hosts two races in 2017, so you can find the race that fits into your schedule or race both to show twice the support for the ladies in your life.
Sunday, April 30, 2017 – Unleash the SHE: Rochester
This spring race in Mayo Clinic’s hometown starts at Rochester Community and Technical College. Racers of the 10K racers toe the line at 9:00 am to launch the day’s events, with the 5K beginning at 9:30 am. The bigger of the two Unleash the SHE events, nearly 900 women raced in 2016.
Sunday, October 15, 2017 – Unleash the SHE: St. Paul
Mark your calendar for this great fall race as well, when a host of ladies will loop St. Paul’s well-known Phalen Lake Park. Women running the 10K start at 8:30 am, followed by the 5K at 9:30 am. In 2016, nearly 600 women competed, evenly split between the two races.

Unleash the SHE includes an acronym in its name, celebrating three words: Strength, Health, and Empowerment. It’s fitting that we’re sharing this women’s race in the same week we celebrated International Women’s Day. Women have changed the face of running, and in turn, running has changed the lives of countless women by providing social support systems, improving physical strength, promoting mental health and more. Today, women outnumber men at most races, and there’s even evidence that women are better at pacing and burn fat reserves more efficiently than male runners.
Just as running creates stronger, healthier and more empowered women, Unleash the SHE is an important resource for strength, health, and empowerment for women looking to stay one stride ahead of ovarian cancer.
The two main races at each Unleash the SHE event are only for women. However, because a diagnosis of ovarian cancer impacts more than just the woman diagnosed, there are two additional co-ed opportunities for men and non-runners to support the cause. At each location, the Support the SHE untimed 5K walk and the Kids 1K run ensure every family member can participate.
From FIVE to $725,000
Five dollars of every race registration will be donated to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA). Funds raised at Unleash the SHE will be added to other MOCA fundraisers and community donations this year to allow the alliance to provide perhaps the most important number in this entire mix: $725,000 in funding to important ovarian cancer research projects at places like the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic.
According to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, ovarian cancer “is only the eleventh most common cancer among women, but is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death among women, and it is the deadliest of gynecologic cancers.”The goal of that $725,000 is to change those numbers for future women.
In the end, Unleash the SHE is about so much more than numbers. It’s about the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, their families, friends and support systems, and the countless other runners and walkers who are taking steps to provide them with strength, health, empowerment and hope.
In 2017, add your stride to this great cause by registering for one of these two events. Run strong. Run free. Unleash your SHE.
