5 Ways Running Made Me A Better Person
Beyond changing habits and adopting a new lifestyle, consistent running and training for races have caused change within me as a human being. Running overall made me stronger, more determined, and more goal-oriented, which has transferred to many other aspects of my life.
How Running Made Me a Better Person
Here are just five ways that running changed my life and made me into a better person:
1. It has provided me a sense of relief and control, allowing me to come back to daily life refreshed and focused.
Running has continued to be my go-to stress reliever, and consistent running helps my life feel more balanced and controlled. Especially when everything else in my life is hectic, running is the one thing that helps my mind to slow down. Running helps clear my head so that I can come back to whatever challenges I am facing with a fresh perspective, proving beneficial to both myself and those around me.
2. It has helped me to appreciate the talents and gifts of others.
Every runner has their own strengths and weaknesses within the sport, and my experiences training in a group has allowed me to realize and appreciate the talents and gifts of those around me, especially those talents and gifts that I myself do not possess. Since I know what goes into training for a marathon, for example, I can better support and encourage anyone working towards this pursuit. This has transferred to other areas of my life as it has helped me to further appreciate the training that goes into any job or task.
3. It has shown me what’s important and what’s not.
You only have so much time in a day, and training can take up a big chunk of that time. Running has taught me how to schedule my life so that I am doing what is most important to me. I have realized the benefits of putting my health first, and the importance of scheduling time to spend with family and friends. There will always be things you need to do that you don’t want to, but scheduling my running schedule has shown me that I can still get everything done while making time to do the things I love.
4. It has made me more grateful.
After a long run, I am grateful for the food in my fridge, a bed to get a good night’s sleep in, and family and friends who support and encourage me in my running endeavors. Even when I experience sore muscles and legs that feel like they are going to fall off, I remind myself to be thankful for this ability to run in the first place. I never want to take running, my health, or anything in my life for granted.
5. It has proved to me that I can do anything I put my mind to.
Running my first marathon tested my mental and physical strengths in ways I hadn’t experienced before. Running has made me more courageous, unafraid of taking on new challenges. It has shown me what can happen if I never, ever give up.
