Our NEW Marathon Training Program!
So, you’ve decided you want to run a marathon. Do you have a marathon training program? If you want to run 26.2 miles, you need a great plan, and three to four months to train.
And shoes. Those are helpful too.
For all six of the marathons I’ve run, I used a 16 – 20 week plan. The longer plans didn’t necessarily make for a better experience. What I’ve learned over the years is that a shorter, more intense plan helps sustain my focus. My last two marathons have only been 12 weeks of marathon specific training.
That said, it’s hard to say exactly when my marathon plans start. Since I’m usually training for another race distance before, I’m not exactly starting from scratch. That allows a much better opportunity to ramp up mileage safely. If you really want to set your self up to have the best possible race, you should build a foundation by which you will plop the rest of your marathon fitness on top of.
Our NEW Marathon Training System
We’re excited to now offer three online marathon training programs. I’m calling them programs, because it has the potential to be far more interactive than our current PDF document that you print out and hang on your fridge. Coach Antonio Vega, former elite with Mizuno and Team USA Minnesota has written these plans, and is brilliant at figuring out how to help push athletes to achieve their goals.
We’ve also teamed up with Final Surge to give you a fantastic online training experience. Final Surge allows athletes to track and analyze their training, sync your GPS watch to upload training data and run reports to see what your overall training looks like during any given month. You’re also able to input all sorts of crazy stuff about your training. From weather, how you felt, what shoe you wore, your diet and more. This creates a more complete program by which you can figure out what’s working, and what isn’t.
This is the exact system I use, and I LOVE it! It has been really helpful to not only see all that great data (I’m a bit of a nerd like that), but to get feedback and insight about my runs. The good, the bad and the ugly. It’s all valuable. We’re also launching a message board as part of this system.
Almost everyone I know, uses some sort of online training tool. As Antonio and I have been working together for almost the past two years, and created our free plan here, this online version goes beyond, and I believe will be a lot more valuable in helping you accomplish your goals. It also allows us to offer some customization based on a few factors from you.
Here’s How it Works
You choose a level of communication you’d like from us (none, some, a lot), your level of training (beginner, intermediate, advanced), and we will create an account in Final Surge, load your 16 week training plan, and watch you smash your next marathon!
Along the way, you can get feedback from us (and others in the community) via message boards and individual email communication. Not only is this a great form of accountability, but an opportunity to learn from the collective wisdom of the group.
The three plans range from $25 – $75, so there’s a little something for everyone. Click below for all the details.
By now, you may have already registered for one of the “major” marathons in Minnesota. Below is a list of ALL the marathons this year. Take a look. I’ve also included a suggested 16 week start date for training.
We would love to help you train! If you have questions or comments, leave them below, or shoot me a quick email.
