Join the 2016 January Miles Challenge
Happy New Year! Join the 2016 January Miles Challenge and set yourself up for an amazing year of fitness. No matter where you live, running in January can be brutal. From the snow and ice, to the slush and rain, it’s easy to put it off until February. Sure, you can tolerate the treadmill, but purchasing one can be expensive, and gyms add a barrier you may not have time for.
Simply put, January is not the best month to run your best, but that’s about to change!
January is a perfect time to begin building a base that will sustain you in whatever ambitions you have this year. Half marathon, 5K, full marathon… easy miles now will pay off later. Oh, and planks, planks are good too.
As we have seen in the past, these virtual challenges are a way to find encouragement from others also slogging through the same sorts of things you are. Since running with others is a great way to stay motivated, why not find that in a virtual environment like this one?! Lets use our collective 5,000 plus membership to encourage everyone to start 2016 en route to achieving success in life and running this year.
What Goal Should You Set?
I set a 15,000 mile audacious goal for us as a group. Based on what we’ve done in the past, this should be difficult, but not impossible. Since individual goals are highly personal, decide for yourself how many miles you will contribute to this.
If, “I will become a runner this year!” is on your list of things to do, plan to hit 50 miles this month. Try the following schedule;
- Week 1: 9 miles
- Week 2: 11 miles
- Week 3: 14 miles
- Week 4: 16 miles
- Total = 50
Doing too much too soon is the quickest way to get injured. By slowly ramping up your miles, you’re less likely to get injured.
If you’re already running 20+ miles a week, 100 miles could be where you need to set your sights. I would still encourage you to slowly ramp up. Increasing by 10 – 15% per week is a good rule of thumb.
Personally, I’m planning 150 miles… and here we go!
Each person who successfully reaches their goal will be entered into a drawing for some sweet Minneapolis Running t-shirts, hoodies, singlets and more!
How To Join The Challenge
Once again, we’re going to use the Etchrock platform. During our September challenge, they were unfortunately in the middle of a big upgrade. I heard from a lot of you that it simple did not work as expected. Emailing with one of the developers (and testing on my own), they seem to have the majority of those usability bugs ironed out, and a few new features as well (like Strava integration and Garmin coming soon).
Here’s how it works…
- Register here for a free account. You can signup using Facebook, or email.
- Click here to “participate” in the Minneapolis Running January 2016 Miles Challenge if you’re not already directed to it.
From there, it should be fairly self explanatory as to how you enter miles. Click the “training” icon and add your miles. You can also upload pictures, leave comments on others, and see your progress against others. PLEASE interact with all of that. It will add to the experience for all.
Best of luck to you in 2016!
