Listen to our Interview with Jeff Metzdorff, Co-Owner of Mill City Running in Minneapolis
Jeff and his Wife Bekah are the co-owners of Mill City Running in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s a small, boutique running store that focuses on providing amazing customer services, community runs (with a ferocious following), and a selection of running gear that is somewhat unique. To quote an earlier article I wrote…
The shop looks more like a Greenwich village boutique than a running store. You won’t find slat walls or the indoor/outdoor carpeting that cover so many running retailers. You won’t find bulky benches, or cardboard boxes filled with last years clearance items. The entire space looks how you want to run – sleek, efficient and beautiful.
They have come a long way since I first wrote that. Not only are they now open, but they carry just about every single brand or item you may want. They also host several group runs throughout the week. From a Tuesday beginning running group, a Wednesday evening run, and the famous Friday morning “flapjack five mile” run. If you’re looking for someone to run with that shares your pace, you will likely find it here.
As mentioned in the episode, my own journey with Mill City Running began on a snowy April afternoon when I learned that the place I was getting my hair cut in NE Minneapolis was closing, but a specialty running store was taking its place. Dream come true! Being just a block from our house, Mill City Running quickly became my local neighborhood running hangout.
Back in June of 2015, I sat down with Jeff to chat about running, the shop, his early days as a rambunctious child in “rural” Minnesota, and how he is now living his dream as co-owner of a fancy running store in one of the hottest neighborhoods in the city.
I always enjoy talking with Jeff. Whether that’s during a run, while eating pancakes, or just randomly stopping stopping in the store. He is always a fountain of information when it comes to what’s hot in the latest running gear and apparel. He’s also a super nice guy.
I am very excited to share this, not only because it was a fun conversation, but also because I thought I lost this audio file (hence why it’s coming out nearly five months later). Unfortunately a few of the “upcoming” things mentioned have passed. However, if you’re looking to do a long run on Saturday, November 14, Mill City Running is hosting their monthly assisted long run.
How to by a Winter Running Jacket (by Jeff)
If you live in the Twin Cities, or are passing through, you definitely need to stop by 411 E Hennepin Ave.
Also, if you enjoy these types of “podcasts,” share that in the comments as I am hoping to do more of them in the coming year.
