How to Find your Next Race
There are A TON of races in the Twin Cities. There are even more if you venture just a few hours away in any direction. Although we love running in and around our beloved MSP, sometimes you need to travel to find a race that matches your schedule.
As runners, we often look for new races. Either to set a PR, or just for fun. Perhaps you have a handful of “go-to” events, but how do you find new ones? It can be a challenge to find a race for a time trial on a specific weekend a few weeks before your next half or full marathon.
Recently, I googled Minnesota Races and found several different race calendars. Some were better than others, but none offered exactly what I was looking for. The director of a brand new local racing site contacted me awhile back, and I think this might be the next best way to find my races in the future.
Based in Minneapolis, RaceGuide365 was created from a partnership between ZapEvent Online Registration and UpTempo Race Management. Kris Kuhn, site co-director, told me, “As athletes, we look at a lot of race calendars and wanted to give Midwest athlete’s a new, easy to use calendar. As race directors, we also post events to a lot of race calendars and wanted to give race directors a new calendar to list their races for free.”
The site primarily lists running events, but they also promote cycling, skiing, youth and multisport (think triathlons). Currently, there are only about 200 listings, but that number is growing. As more and more people become aware of the site, it will become more thorough… like Wikipedia! This is one of RaceGuide365’s strengths.
In essence, this site has the ability to crowdsource the best races. If there’s not a race on the site, and you think should be, add it! A simple form lets anybody submit any race. If all checks out, within a few days it will be approved and listed. This is not only great for race directors, but runners who want to share their experience from a new great race they’ve discovered.
Kuhn said they are intentionally focusing on the mid-west. “We wanted to start by best serving the athletes and race directors from the area we live in and love the most!” They’ve also got some fun upgrades planned.
