How Busy Runners can Find more Time to Run
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done to squeeze in a run? Head out the door in the middle of the night? Pay someone to watch your kids so you can get in a long run?
As runners, we’re constantly trying to find ways to fit more hours in the day. Distance running is a time consuming passion! Unless you sleep less – which is a bad idea – you’ll need to find time elsewhere.
As the father of a one year old, I realized that whatever limited time I thought I had, was nothing compared to life with a baby. Sleeping and running on a regular, set schedule was a luxury I didn’t know I had until I no longer had it.
Below are some tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years to find more time to run. There are also a few insights from many of you during last nights Twitter Chat – read the highlights.
Run to Work
If possible, run to or from work. For almost 4 years I did this and it was glorious. I estimate I saved 5 – 10 hours/week. Here’s how I did it.
Wear Your Running Clothes to Bed
This is a little trick I’ve been doing for years. By wearing all or part of what you’re going to wear on your morning run, you can pop out of bed and be physically and mentally ready to go. You won’t putz around trying to find your stuff.
Run Errands – Literally
Run in the Morning
My logic is that if you run in the morning, not only do you get it out of the way, but you only have to shower and get ready once. Your work hours may not allow for this, but if possible, do it.
Run at Lunch
Skip a longer lunch, eat at your desk after, and run instead. Duh.
Run with Friends
When you’re training for a longer race, it seems like you’re always the one leaving the party early to prepare for your long run the next day. Train with friends and the long run becomes the party!
Get a Baby Jogger
This only applies if you already have kids. We own the Baby Jogger City Elite and it has changed my life. I run with my son 2 or 3 times a week. He loves it, I get a run in (sometimes we do errands too – those strollers hold a lot), and we’re both happier because of it.
Use Amazon auto Re-Fill
I always, ALWAYS recommend going to your local running store first! If you don’t have time, and have Amazon Prime, certain items you buy regularly can get delivered automatically. I do this for Garden of Life protein powder and it’s amazing.
Less Time, Harder Run
If you look at your schedule and realize there’s no way you can get your work out in, try moving it to another day. If that’s not an option, figure out how much time you do have, and make every minute count.
If you have 30 minutes, warm up for 5 then crank it for 20, and cool down for 5. You’ll feel better about yourself than if you just plodded along for 30.
Always Have a Plan!
Not just for your workout, but for your week, month and year. Look way out to schedule around travel, stressful times at work, school, or significant life events.
