Some Gift Ideas for People Who Run
Do you need gift ideas for people who run? Here are a few.
Christmas is a great time to be generous, but it can be stressful when shopping for someone who isn’t vocal about what they “want”. As a child I told everyone exactly what I wanted to Christmas, which mostly consisted of LEGOs, baseball cards, and Game Gear stuff. I made lists and anxiously hoped I would get some of what was on it. Before having a job or my own money, Christmas was my one opportunity during the year to score what my pre-adolescent mind thought would make me happy… and it did!
Today, I can pretty much buy all toys I want. As an adult, the best gifts are things I didn’t even know I wanted, but someone knew me so well they found it for me. Several years ago, my mother in law gave me a Kindle. Initially I thought it was stupid. Eight years later I can’t imagine reading without it. Last year, my dad bought me a pair of Bluetooth headphones, something I thought I’d be taking back, but use almost every day.
If you’re like me, you may want to get your loved ones something they didn’t know they wanted, but are paralyzed trying to figure out what that is. As a result, you wait until the last possible moment, then panic and get something dumb. Below are some of my gift ideas for people who run, but also ideas for people who like gifts too.
Expensive Gift Ideas for People Who Run
If you’re really trying to impress someone, or simply have too much money and can’t figure out what to do with it, buy that special someone in your life a treadmill. Treadmills aren’t just for fighting bad weather. If you have kids, or a crazy schedule, owning a treadmill might be the only way to actually run.
Alternatively, if that person doesn’t have anywhere to put said treadmill, perhaps a gym membership is what they need. Splurge and get them a lifetime membership at whatever location is near them. Or, (since money is no object in this scenario) maybe something like Class Pass would be more helpful. Pick their city, and let them take a safari around to different fitness classes.
To go in a completely different direction, maybe they/you need a new mattress. The Bear Mattress is kind of perfect for runners.
The BEAR MATTRESS is designed for athletes and people living a healthy, active lifestyle. It has been engineered with both advanced foam and Celliant™ responsive textile technologies.
My wife and I just bought this for ourselves for Christmas. It claims it will help you recover faster. If true, that alone would be worth the $650 – $950 price tag. Since we have been looking for a new mattress like this for awhile, and there is a 100 days risk free trial, we thought we’d splurge. If you wanna give it a try, use this code and get $50 off. Sleep is important!
Non-Expensive Gift Ideas for People Who Run
Ok, now that we’ve left the land of make believe, here are a few practical gift ideas for people who run.
Meister Neoprene Toe Booties – a recent discovery of mine from Jon Peterson of Team USA MN, these little gems will keep your toes warm(er) in your shoes without adding much bulk. This would be great for anyone who gets cold toes in the winter, which is probably everyone.
Base Layers – an extra pair during the cold months is nice so you don’t have to do laundry after each run. Nike’s new Hyperwarm series is pretty sweet, as is the Under Armour Warm Gear line, but anything that is form fitting and wicks sweat will do.
SOLE Recovery Sandals – These are amazingly comfortable, durable, and provide great overall foot support. Hands down my favorite thing to wear on my feet (I’m wearing an ‘indoor’ pair as I type this). I just stumbled upon the recovery model, and will be asking for these for Christmas. Perfect to throw on your feet after a race or tough workout.
Momentum Athletic & Inspired Jewelry – started by a University of Minnesota alum, they make custom hand-stamped jewelry designed to inspire and motivate you. It’s personalized, and can be stamped with PR’s, or other sayings just for your runner.
BOSU Balance Trainer – these aren’t exactly the cheapest things in the world ($75 – $225), but they make a great addition to any home gym. They help with balance, core activation, and improved muscle recruitment, all good things for active people.
For the Runner Who Has Everything
If that runner in your life already has everything mentioned above, here are two things I’m pretty sure they do not have.
Your running friend has probably read something from Mark Remy. Mark has been a writer with Runner’s World for a million years, most notably “Remy’s World.” Recently, he launched his own site called “Dumb Runner.” It’s a combination of humor and running advice, but from a far less serious perspective. The training journal, with forward by Dean Karnazes, is “a running log for runners who run.” and “like an online log, except not online.” It’s 52 weeks of funny, with a place to log your miles too.
Minneapolis Running t-shirts and hoodies
We are selling t-shirts and hoodies during the holiday season (or until they sell out)! You can get a grey soft t-shirt (men’s and women’s styles) with our black logo, and navy blue soft hoodies with our full color logo. We can ship them anywhere, and I will even autograph it for free should you want that (no clue why you would).
Orders will start shipping December 6 and should take about a week. If you order before the 17th, we can have them to your door by Christmas.
A Word about Gift Cards
If everything above looks stupid, and you need something fast, you can always just get them a gift card. Ideally, get it from one of two places:
- A gift card to their local running specialty store. You know they’ll use it and love it.
- A gift card to Amazon because hey, it’s Amazon. They will be buying something there anyway, running related or not.
Hopefully these gift ideas for people who run have been tremendously helpful. If you’re a regular reader of this site, you many just want to forward it to that someone special in your life as a heads up. Everybody wins and it may save you from having to ask for a gift receipt for those blinking, glow in the dark leg warmers.
Merry Christmas Happy Holidays Peace and Happiness for you in your gift giving pursuits!
