The Fast and the Curious – An Urban Adventure Race!
Most of us are in the thick of training for big fall races. From marathons we’re hoping to dominate en route to Boston, to shorter races we’re trying to set a PR, whatever it is, most of us are hyper focused on reaching our big audacious running goals.
Maybe it’s time to take running a bit less serious, at least for one day. If you’d rather flex your intellectual muscles while running through some of the loveliest parts of Minneapolis, perhaps you should signup for the first ever The Fast and The Curious urban adventure hosted by Mill City Running, Saucony, and Fulton Brewery.
This charming 2.5 hour scavenger hunt will give you a chance to get to know the Minneapolis Downtown and North Loop neighborhoods while you hunt for glory. Strategize your route, decipher clues, perform challenges & rack up points as you and a partner run through city streets.
How it Works
Starting at 9:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday, September 17, each team of two (or register as an individual to be matched with someone else according to pace) will be given a list of clues & challenges and will have until 12 noon to complete as many as possible. When you’re done (or when it’s noon), return to Fulton Tap Room to share a pint and all of your stories.
Since there isn’t a set course, the actual number of miles you run will vary greatly. Race organizers estimate as little as 4, to as many as 12, depending on how efficient you are and how many challenges you complete. Get creative in how you rack up points!
Prizes will be given away throughout the event, including Saucony running shoes for the winning teams, a head-to-toe outfit from Saucony’s trendy “Life on the Run” line for one lucky hunter, and tons of give-aways from other event sponsors. Additionally, there will be an big prize for best team theme. Costumes/matching outfits are “strongly encouraged.”
How did This Start?
Mishka Vertin, race creator and super-employee at Mill City Running, is a bit of a pro when it comes to organizing events like this. She loves bringing people together, using running as the catalyst for changing lives (she is also one of the people behind Mile in My Shoes).
Her hope with The Fast and the Curious is that participants have a blast while getting to explore an unfamiliar part of Minneapolis.
Scavenger Hunts like this are such a great way to get everyone moving – even people who don’t consider themselves “runners.” And we love Minneapolis; the history of this area, and the local businesses that make it unique – this is a chance to get to know both of those aspects better, to get people interacting with their community. We hope to create a really memorable day in the city, totally unlike your usual Saturday, that you talk about for months to come. We will definitely do more events like this in the future, events that use running as a catalyst to engage with the city and its residents!
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, but that you had fun! “I’m most excited for the teams to get back to Fulton Brewery, exhausted but laughing” says Vertin, “to have a beer or two and share the stories of their crazy adventures with one another!”
