Experience Greatness at the Reebok Ragnar Great River Relay
Ragnar relay races are a little bit different from your traditional road race. For one, they cover the expanse of 200+ miles over the course of two days and one night. They also rely heavily on things you don’t typically consider when road racing: things like teamwork, running & sleeping shifts, bright yellow safety vests, and a van large enough to tote around 6-12 runners. The journey of a Ragnar relay team is not so much about the time on a clock (though it could be) or the pace of a runner, but about the experience, and a great one at that!
Ragnar relay races are held all over the country, but you don’t need to trek far to get in on the action. The annual Reebok Ragnar Great River takes place right here in the Midwest, traveling from Winona to Minneapolis, MN on August 17-18.

What is a Ragnar Relay?
Reebok Ragnar Relays are long distance, overnight running relays that take place in the most breathtaking places in the world. Teams of 6 or 12 runners come together to conquer a course and push their limits, on small amounts of sleep, and with friends and a community of runners by their side.
About the Reebok Ragnar Great River Relay
Now in its 13th year, Ragnar Great River celebrates more than just the Mississippi, America’s longest river. This race is the epitome of what Ragnar Relays are all about: a community of runners, local flavor, wide-open roads where your support van never leaves your side, Wisconsin countryside, Minnesota city-life, and one of the most epic non-stop “road trips” you’ll ever experience!
This overnight running adventure takes place in mid-August when the daylight hangs on as long as it possibly can and making those sunsets super golden and spectacular. It’s a great time to experience the great Mississippi River! Psst…if you’re nervous about your first big relay race, here are ten things to know before your first Ragnar!
The relay kicks off along the Mississippi River at Levee park as one runner hits the road at a time. You’ll run river-side, past Crochrane’s Flag Memorial (Leg 3), and through what can only be described as “pure Americana” with majestic farmland, picturesque barns, colors of green you never knew existed, and the happiest cows on earth, day and night, and day again.
But don’t stop for too long to take photos, the finish line in Minneapolis is close by! After each runner completes their designated legs, you’ll run under a bright orange arch together, as a team, where a serious Ragnar medal is waiting to adorn your neckline.
Running 200+ miles might sound daunting, but on a relay team you can split up the distance, trade sleeping, driving, eating, and running shifts, and hand off the sacred slap bracelet (Ragnar’s version of a relay baton). Few things are as satisfying as finishing an epic and exhausting relay leg, tagging in your next runner, and giving a huge high-five to your teammates!
If running 200+ miles between teammates isn’t challenging enough, the fine folks at Ragnar have created a new challenge! With the CrossFit Division, runners can go head-to-head against other CrossFit affiliates in the local area for a chance to win the coveted 80LB Ragnar kettlebell.
To join, choose to be a part of the “CrossFit Division” after you register. To be eligible, 50% of your Ragnar team needs to be an active member of the CrossFit affiliate you will represent.
