Why Everyone Should Try Running
Many times, when people find out that I am runner or that I have completed a marathon, their response is, “Wow, I could never do that.” I often try to explain that running a marathon or being a runner is something that anyone can do. Training for a marathon or any race is challenging, but when it is something you really want to accomplish, I truly believe that you can do it. Certainly, there are circumstances that inhibit people from running, but in most cases, I think everyone should run or at least give it try!
The Benefits of Running
There are many benefits to running including improved overall health and fitness levels to reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. However, along with these physical benefits, there are many mental benefits to running as well. I believe these can be unique to each person.
For me, running gets my heart pumping and quickens my step, while simultaneously slowing down the thoughts, plans, and ideas flooding through my mind. Going for a run gives me the permission to escape the busyness of everyday life and reflect on the things that are most important to me. Sometimes, it allows me to just get outside by myself and just “be”; to focus on my surroundings and what is going on around me instead of being so consumed with my own life. All and all, it improves my mood and reduces stress.
These are only a few of the physical and mental benefits of running – I encourage you to try it out for yourself to see what you can get out of running!
Try Running This Summer
Are you looking to start running or improve your training? Now is a perfect time! The cold winter is gone and now it is time to enjoy the beautiful Minnesota summers. There are a variety of races that happen during the summer, some with family-friendly events before the race or post-race parties with entertainment and refreshments. Plus, Minnesota is home to many great running routes throughout the state. Finally, you won’t be discouraged by your lack of company (even if you are running alone), as many Minnesotans are out running this time of the year!

Everyone Is A Runner
Finally, I truly believe that if you run, you are a runner, no matter how fast or how far you run. If running is something you enjoy, and you have experienced some of the benefits of running that I listed above or discovered on your own, I encourage you to make or continue to make running a part of your life. And while you are at it, encourage others to run or invite them to run along with you so that more people can experience the “joy of running”!
