Fraser, the Twin Cities nonprofit, has been sponsoring race teams for the Life Time Tri Minneapolis (with team champion Vincent Francoual of Vincent – The Restaurant) and a number of other running and cycling events for the past several years to help raise money for its autism programs. This year, Fraser has re-launched its race teams as Team Fraser, and is forming teams for six events this season.
What is Fraser
Fraser is Minnesota’s largest and most experienced provider of autism services, and also provides services for mental health and other developmental disabilities for children and adults. Team Fraser members have a variety of motivations, and include people who have family members with autism, people who are honoring friends or the children of friends, and those just wanting to get in shape and race.
“My best friend’s daughter was evaluated and receives treatment at Fraser,” said Jessica Fashant-Peterson, who has raced the Life Time Tri for Fraser several times. “It is amazing to cross that finish line knowing how much it benefits not only my health, but many others who depend on Fraser. As a family nurse practitioner who often refers children to Fraser for autism evaluations, it’s a win-win.”
Jennifer Sweetser-Puckett not only joined Team Fraser herself in the past, but has involved her son Ted, who has autism. Jennifer, Ted, and Jennifer’s daughter Maddy competed as a relay team in the Life Time Tri in 2010. Jennifer swam, Ted biked, and Maddy ran.
“As a parent of a son with Asperger’s, there is nothing better than having an opportunity to get him involved in giving back,” Jennifer said. “It gives him a sense of accomplishment, plus an underlying gratitude for all we have benefited from through Fraser.”
