11 Father’s Day Gift Ideas for Dads who Run
Father’s day is June 15th – that wonderful Sunday when you get to celebrate your dad!
Growing up, I was often frustrated trying to figure out what gift to get for mine. Inevitably I’d settle on a cheap tie, dress socks or some homemade knickknack for his office. When I got a little older, I’d spring for a gift card. It would have been easier to have a list, so I could get dad the perfect gift.
Now that I’m a father myself (this is my second father’s day – last year my son was barely two months old and I slept through most of it), I realize the gifts don’t matter. It’s about spending time with your family doing something fun.
That being said, here is a list I’ve compiled (with the help of a dozen other runner dads), to help all those kids (and moms) who don’t know what to get their dads for father’s day. There’s something to fit every budget.
Get your father and awesome gift to make him a stronger, happier runner!
1. Running Permission Slip – Free
Dads (like moms) are busy, and finding time to run with a family is tricky. If you really want to get dad something great, make him a coupon good for permission to go on an all day run. Better yet, send him on the run and make brunch after!
2. Compression Socks $30
The research goes both ways on these, but for about $30, compression socks are an inexpensive way to get dad something he may not want to splurge on himself for.Compression Socks
3. Sunglasses $30
Running sunglasses are one of those things that I hate to spend much money on, because they always seem to break or get lost. That said, they are invaluable for summer running. Here is a very reasonable, unbreakable and lightweight pair that comes in a variety of colors/style.Running Sunglasses
4. Running Socks $10 – $30
Every runner needs more socks. Figure out what your runner dad likes (Fitsok, Feetures, Smartwool, etc) and pamper him with a few new pairs.Running Socks
5. Spibelt – $20
Spibelts rock – no matter what you put in them. It’s great for stashing phone, keys, gel, credit cards etc. Keep dad safe with one of these low profile running belts.Running Belt

8. Running Store Gift Card – $100
Give your dad a gift certificate to his favorite specialty running store. He can get shoes, shorts… whatever he wants! $100 would be nice.
Another spin on this, give him a race entry gift card. The kids can make this for him, then sit down and help him decide which race he should run. Here are some ideas.
9. Recovery Tools
Running makes you sore. Recovery tools like rollers or trigger point massagers can be a very welcome treat. Here are several great massage recovery tools we’ve already reviewed.
This might be the gift dad doesn’t know he wants! A kettlebell is a cast iron ball with a handle attached to the top. They’re simple, and great to use for building all around strength. You engage your entire core, as well as arms and legs for a full body workout. Here is one great routine.
Ideally, you’ll want three sizes for the most versatility – 8lbs, 15lbs, 25lbsBuy dad some kettlebells!
11. New GPS Watch
Most dads have one, but probably want a newer model (I know I do). Since running with a GPS device is awesome, he might like the highly rated Garmin Forerunner 220 ($250). The Nike+ Sports Watch is another great option if he’s already using Nike+.Garmin Forerunner 220 Nike+ Sport Watch
