Why Runners Should Eat Muesli

On a cold Minnesota morning there’s nothing quite as delightful as a hot bowl of oatmeal with fruit and brown sugar. In the summertime, a hot bowl of anything is less desirable. This time of year, I switch to cold cereals. Recently, I’ve discovered something much better.

Muesli – a nutrient rich, calorie packed, healthy alternative to most cereals. Seven Sundays’, a local Minneapolis company, produces four gourmet varieties. Recently they offered me some samples to review. Like granola, but better, this simple food has become my new favorite!

What is Muesli?

I didn’t know what Muesli was before Seven Sundays’ contacted me. Surprisingly  it has been around for over 100 years – more common in Europe, New Zealand and Australia then here. It was developed around 1900 by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner for patients in his hospital.

Muesli (meaning mix or stew) is an all natural, healthy cereal made of unprocessed whole grains, nuts, seeds and dried fruits. It is available dry, ready made, or fresh. You can top it with milk, yogurt, or any variety of liquid.

Muesli vs Granola

Sound like granola? There are definite similarities, but the differences are quite clear. According to Seven Sundays’;

  1. Muesli is less toasted, or completely un-toasted. This leads to more nutritional value because it’s less impacted by heat and processing.
  2. Muesli has more ingredients than granola. In addition to 15 types of nutrient-packed nuts, seeds and fruits, “we use three different kinds of fiber-rich grains giving you more than 25% of your daily fiber in just one half cup.
  3. Muesli contains far less sugar than a typical granola. You won’t find refined sugar in Seven Sundays’ muesli. “We rely on ingredients like dried cherries, organic honey, and coconut to add sweetness.”
  4. Many granolas contain processed oils or fats. Muesli doesn’t.

How Does Muesli Taste?

Delicious! Very similar texture to granola, but softer. Not sweet, yet I didn’t add sugar. I enjoy it with an assortment of fresh berries. Seven Sundays’ makes four flavors;

  • Original
  • Cherry Almond
  • Ginger Pear Macadamia
  • Bircher-Benner

They have a very hearty taste, and I felt I got fuller eating less. They were quite tasty, but I wasn’t a fan of the Pear Ginger. It had a little kick I didn’t care for (my wife liked it however). The other three were excellent. The flavors of the nuts and berries really distinguish themselves from one another. Each bite offers a unique flavor combination.

Benefits for Runners

Rolled oats are known to reduce cholesterol and is a low GI whole grain, giving a slow release of energy, keeping you fuller longer. They also provide B-complex vitamins, iron, and cholesterol-fighting soluble fiber. The nuts and seeds provide essential fatty acids and nutrients, with endless health benefits. Dried fruits are rich in antioxidants, vitamin A, and immune-boosting vitamin C.

The dense calories makes this a great option when you’re famished after a long run. You can add it to pancake, waffle, or muffin mix. The possibilities are endless!

    Hey Nathan! Many people eat muesli hot too (I agree, better in the winter though!). Just boil equal parts water and muesli for a couple minutes over the stove and voila! You’ve got a yummy, hearty, nutrient-dense muesli porridge. Great write up. Thanks for sharing our muesli with your readers!!
