Why Runners Should Care About Their Socks
How often do you think about socks? Probably not very much. Your socks are arguably your most important piece of gear, yet they get little attention. If you’ve ever had a blister, more than likely it was caused by cheap socks.
This summer I got a blister so bad I could barely put my shoe on, let alone run. It was caused by running 15 miles in a pair of socks way past their prime. The elastic was worn out, and the thread so thin it looked like mesh. After limping around for two days, I decided it was time to invest in some high quality socks.
What Makes a High Quality sock?
Socks have one job – to prevent blisters. When moisture and heat (friction) are present, they irritate your skin, making it prime real-estate for blisters. Cheap socks don’t use good moisture wicking fabric, and tend to slip and slide on your foot creating hot spots.
The majority of high quality running socks use basically the same fabric. Fabric that moves moisture away from your foot and regulates the temperature to keep it cool. They cost a little more, but worth it. What sets brands apart from one another is the way in which those fabrics are used.
Great socks are designed to stay snug on your foot. They should have some sort of arch band around the middle to help keep it in place. The heel also needs to be engineered in such a way so that the back of the sock doesn’t slide up and down.
There are lots of great socks out there by Brooks, Smartwool, and New Balance to name a few. In my experience, Fitsok is the best of all of these.
Why You Should Try Fitsok
Fitsok is a local, Minnesota based company that makes outstanding high quality running socks. I received a pair in a race swag bag last year, and quickly fell in love. They are soft, snug and keep my feet surprisingly dry. I’ve since purchased, worn and raced in all but the ISW and highly recommend each one.
Fitsok socks are designed with Flowtek channels that promote airflow around your foot, as well as have an engineered heel and precision toe for optimal fit as well as arch support to “alleviate foot fatigue by providing a supportive fit around the arch.” Their use of “Coolmax®, Sorbtek™, Isolwool™, Shadow Yarn and other advanced fabrics promote airflow and moisture management.”
A few unique features about each model.
- CF2: Light cushioning for prolonged, everyday use.
- CX3: Lightweight and snug with a more minimal feel.
- F4: Anatomical left-right fit with superior moisture management for race day conditions.
- ISW: Made with merino wool, has stabilizing features of Isowool.
Another unique feature of Fitsok is that they come in a three pack for the same price as a single pair of other high quality socks. When you run several times a week, there’s nothing better than doing it in a fresh pair of high quality socks. It also makes it more affordable so you don’t hang on to them longer than you should!
I talked with Jeff at Fitsok who said they have a goal to create high quality, everyday running socks to help athletes perform better. He noted that when runners don’t pay attention to their socks, it’s like buying a sports car with cheap tires. “It doesn’t matter how great the engine is if it can’t stay on the road.”
Head to your local running store and get a three pack of Fitsok today. Your feet will thank you!
