Meet WeRunMPLS Running Club
At Minneapolis Running, we believe that running with a group has countless benefits, and we love to highlight Minnesota running groups that might match your style.
Each Thursday night at 6:30pm, WeRunMPLS meets at Five Watt Coffee for a 3 mile run. After a brief introduction and route description, the crew hits the streets of South Minneapolis with the mantra, “No one runs alone.” Pace groups naturally form, but one thing is guaranteed: every runner will have a buddy.
This month, I joined the WeRunMPLS crew for a Thursday night run to get a taste of the experience. It was my first time running with any group other than a track team, and I laced up my shoes without much knowledge of what I’d encounter.
At WeRunMPLS, I found a group of welcoming runners who genuinely enjoy each other’s company and are eager to introduce themselves. I found a crew where new runners, recreational runners and experienced marathoners can all find a home. I witnessed playful competition, welcoming smiles and plenty of laughter. WeRunMPLS is a running group where runners are eager to stick around after the run for delicious snacks and quality time with a community of friends.
That community feel is exactly what WeRunMPLS co-founder Kaitlyn Cox intended when she formed the running group with her friend Jen Glesne in spring 2014.
“We wanted to create a space where people could connect, establish friendships and find new running/training buddies. We wanted to have our own spin on what a run club looked like so we designed the group as community first, running second.” Kaitlyn explained. “Yes, we’re there to run, but we’re also there to encourage each other, cheer each other on, build friendships and build relationships in the MPLS community.”
Part of that great community feel lies in the unique details. Each week when the group returns to their home base of Five Watt Coffee, WeRunMPLS enlists local partners to provide snacks and drink coupons so runners stick around for post-run fellowship.
On the third Thursday of each month, the group starts the run from at a brewery in the Twin Cities for “Wild Card Week.” Like usual, the route is 3 miles, but the post-run fellowship is a bit hoppier.
For runners looking to add a bit more mileage, WeRunMPLS meets for a Long Run Saturday once a month. Starting at Five Watt Coffee, the crew offer two routes: a 5-6 mile loop and a 11-12 mile loop, both often utilizing the perennial favorite running paths along the Chain of Lakes.
Future Plans of WeRunMPLS
This spring, WeRunMPLS celebrated its second anniversary, and the running club’s schedule is much busier than its early days. Leading and organizing a running group can undoubtedly be time-consuming, but for Kaitlyn and her co-leaders, the community and motivation outweigh the work.
“The people WeRunMPLS has brought together are some of the funniest, kindest, most encouraging people and for me, they are what makes the work worth it.” Kaitlyn explained.
For a running club that continues to grow in numbers and events, the horizon is glowing brightly. While Kaitlyn couldn’t yet reveal a few partnerships and projects whose final details are still in the works, she promised “big things in the cards for WeRunMPLS” including cheering crews at fall races and additional ways to build community throughout the year.
To give the WeRunMPLS experience a test run, all you need to do is show up! Search the Minneapolis Running calendar for upcoming runs or check out the WeRunMPLS website or Facebook page for further details.
