Join the January 50 or 100 Mile Challenge
Join the January Miles Challenge and set yourself up to make 2014 your best year ever! Running in January can be brutal. From the snow and ice, to the slush and rain, it’s easy to put it off. Sure, you can tolerate the treadmill, but finding time to hit the gym (and paying for it) can be one more excuse to skip it.
Regardless of where you live (southern California aside), it’s typically not the best month to run your best. That’s unfortunate because it’s a great time to start building your base if you plan to run a spring, summer or even fall half or full marathon. Easy miles now will pay off later.
I’ve mentioned this before, but last January, I started training with a group of guys who would help me set significant PR’s in both the half and full marathon. Little did I know how important those January miles would be to building my base. Had it not been for that running group, I probably wouldn’t have started training until late February.
How We can Motivate a Community
Minneapolis Running has built a modest, but sizable following in the past year. Lets use that momentum to encourage each other (both virtually and in person) to start 2014 right! This could go beyond running into multiple areas of life.
We’ll be issuing two virtual running challenges. The 50 and 100 mile challenge! Each time you run, simply enter your miles and track your progress on the leaders chart. It’s not a competition, but a way to mutually encourage each other towards our goals.
If you’re new to running, you can easily hit 50 miles in January. Try the following schedule;
- Week 1: 9 miles
- Week 2: 11 miles
- Week 3: 14 miles
- Week 4: 16 miles
- Total = 50
Doing too much too soon is the quickest way to get injured. By slowly ramping your miles up, you’re less likely to get injured.
If you’re considering the 100 mile challenge, you’re probably already running a bit. I would still encourage you to slowly ramp your miles up by 10 – 15% per week.
Each person who successfully reaches their goal will be entered into a drawing for some sweet t-shirts. More details to come, but it will be worth it!
How to Join the Challenge
Simply use this link to begin entering your miles on January 1. Since email is the only way to make sure we have a unique identifier for you, we’ll be using that to track. Make sure you use the same email address each time you enter your miles. This information will be public, so if you don’t want your email displaying, let me know! Also enter which challenge you’re committing to.
The chart should calculate everything automatically. The first time you enter your info, there may be a little delay.
