How You can Support Team USA Minnesota with the Plus 3 Network
What if I told you there was a way to support Team USA Minnesota, and the ongoing development of elite distance runners, that wouldn’t cost you anything, and you’d probably become healthier yourself?
Sound too good to be true?
It’s called the Plus 3 Network. A group that “connects people with corporate sponsors and worthwhile causes on a lasting journey of personal fitness and charitable giving.” It’s a new way to fundraise that focuses on building all around healthier lives.
I’ve been a supporter of Team USA Minnesota via social media and through Minneapolis Running for awhile. When I learned I could also help them raise money, I had to sign up.
Monetizing healthy behavior is brilliant!
What is the Plus 3 Network?
I talked with Joe Fabris, one of the founders of Plus 3 Network. As a veteran of the tech industry, and runner himself (sub 4 miler in his younger days, and a 4:33 masters miler), he is heavily invested in the intersection of fitness, fundraising and technology.
Fabris told me that corporations donate money that’s put into an escrow account and earmarked for certain types of organizations. Those organizations apply, and if accepted, can begin receiving funds based on the activity of their community. According to Pat Goodwin, founder and president of Team USA Minnesota, “We are only one of five training centers in the country that qualified to participate in this fundraising effort.”
Fabris said they want to, “ignite something that’s already in you (a passion for running, biking, etc), help corporations promote their causes… plus give something back to a charity organization…”
It’s about, Fitness, Community and Advocacy. They are quite literally turning “sweat equity into social capital.”
Based in Silicon Valley, in the five years they’ve been active, Plus 3 has facilitated the giving away of over $1 million, with an active membership network of 30,000+ users.
How to Earn Money for Team USA Minnesota
Plus 3 Network operates on a “kudos” system. You earn kudos by completing virtually any activity. There are three ways to earn kudos.
- By Distance (per mile)
- By Time (per hour)
- By Healthy Habit (per activity)
There is a massive amount of activities that count. Yesterday I earned kudos for running 6 miles, walking over an hour while doing errands, playing with my son, flossing, not drinking alcohol, not smoking and getting 7.5+ hours of sleep. Laughing is even on the list!
Running is great, but the goal of this program is to reward you for creating habits that lead to a well rounded healthier lifestyle.
Strength in Numbers
I only received 1 cent for getting a good night sleep, but if half of the people who read this blog on a daily basis did that for a month… that’s $75 we just earned for Team USA Minnesota in our sleep!
Multiply that with more people and more activities… it adds up quick.
Get Started with the Plus 3 Network
Follow these three VERY easy steps to get started.
- Create a free Plus 3 Account.
- On the second page, it will ask you to select a cause. Scroll down until you find Team USA Minnesota (or use command F to search).
- Click select and begin adding your miles and other activity. Easy!
You can add your activity by uploading from a GPS, entering them manually, or downloading the app and do it from your phone.
This is quite literally a team effort. There are bonuses for the most engaged communities. Currently the NY/NJ Track Club is in the lead, and bragging about it on Twitter. That needs to stop…
