A Guide to Finding Running Trails in the Twin Cities
The Twin Cities offers plenty of great unpaved running trails for the adventurous runner who is willing to look for them and maybe get a little dirty. Running trails can be a great change of pace from constantly running on paved roads. We’ve spent the past three years exploring and getting lost on the trails around the metro (and beyond). From the state and regional parks to the miles of trails along the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, it’s amazing how many dirt trails can be found so close to the heart of both downtowns. We’re putting together a comprehensive map that will contain some of our favorite running trails in the Twin Cities.

Trail Descriptions and Rating System
In the coming weeks and months, we will be reviewing each of these trails (and more) and providing data (distance and elevation), tips for navigating them, and tempting photos. Our goal is to share what we’ve learned and hopefully make these gems better known and more accessible. We’ve also attempted to label each trail on the map by its degree of difficulty. We’ve adopted the “beginner, intermediate, or expert” system of “green circle, blue square, black diamond.” While these ratings can be somewhat subjective, we categorized the trails with the following variables in mind:
- Elevation change
- Terrain (is it covered in rocks and roots, or is it a flat, smooth surface?)
This is a work in Progress!
As mentioned, we’ll be adding more trails and reviewing each one in the coming week and months. Don’t see your favorite trail on here? Contact us or let us know in the comments below! What are some of your favorite running trails in the Twin Cities?
