What’s New in the 2016 TC Challenge Race Series?
The TC Challenge Race Series from Twin Cities In Motion is becoming more and more popular. The 2015 numbers were up almost 20% from the previous year. With added incentives for participation, runners have more reason than ever to signup and complete one of these. The 2016 TC Challenge Race Series has a few new things that should help you stay motivated month after month. There is a little something for everyone.
When I plan my yearly race calendar, I like to register for something I’ve done in the past, along with something I haven’t. There is some comfort knowing what to expect, and excitement from experiencing something new. The TC Challenge Race Series offers both – the familiar and the new.
New This Year
- Series specific exclusive full-zip technical hoodie with series art.
- New 5k at Red, White, & Boom Half marathon on July 4.
- TC Summit Challenge, MNy Version. This includes 3 5K’s and a 10 miler.
What’s not new is a series of extremely well organized, well supported, chip timed events, that have tons of spectators along the way to keep you going.
What Is The TC Challenge Race Series?
As it enters its fourth year, Twin Cities In Motion is constantly tweaking the series, using input from the thousands of runners who complete these races each year. Executive Director Virginia Brophy Achman told us that,
Runners are always looking for new ways to challenge themselves, and our series offer them an opportunity to push their fitness to a new level.
Most runners are motivated by competing solely against themselves. For being such an amazingly communal sport, runners sometimes avoid the more competitive mindset so prevalent in other sports. The 2016 TC Challenge Race Series offers participants something unique. You can track all of your results online, and compare how you are doing compared to others in the series. It provides another level of competition and motivation. Maybe you had a bad race, but so did the person close to you in the standings, and you’re still neck and neck! It’s a unique way to push yourself.
By registering now, you get the best deal (prices go up real soon). Finishers not only get the technical hoodie mentioned above but challenge specific medals and some other cool swag.
The Loony Challenge launched in 2013, the other four series joined it in 2014. In 2015, around 1,400 runners signed up for one of the five series.
The Year Long Challenge
As I mentioned last year, one benefit of signing up for a race series is that it can help you stick to a regular running schedule. Hopefully, right now, you’re in the mood to get in really great running shape next year. When you commit NOW to a year of fitness, you’re less likely to slide on your goals.
This is also great for those who want a semi-structured way to ramp up their miles to complete longer distances. Anyone who lacks motivation long term will benefit from the ongoing challenges of so many races.
The Series Races
TC 5K Challenge – EXPANDED FOR 2016
If you’re a new runner looking to build routine into your racing, the TC 5K Challenge is for you. Also ideal for short-distance racers working on their 5k PR. NEW THIS YEAR: Series expanded to include four events! This series runs in February, March, July and October.
TC Summit Challenge
Provides a tremendous benefit if you are looking to safely ramp up miles to complete longer distances. With plenty of time to get ready, all you need is a solid training plan. Another benefit is guaranteed entry into the competitive Medtronic TC 10 Mile. This series runs in February, March, July, and October.
NEW IN 2016: TC Summit Challenge, MNy Version
Take on a brand new version of your favorite race series! This is great for who has never run longer than a 5k. Spend a few months building a great base, then cap your year with the TC 10 Mile in October. This series runs, February, March, July, and October.
- Valentine’s Day TC 5K
- Hot Dash 5K
- Red, White & Boom! 5K
- Medtronic TC 10 Mile
TC Ultra Summit Challenge
This is a great challenge for first-time marathoners, or anyone looking to set a PR. The benefit for you here is in successfully completing all four training cycles. Assuming all goes well, you’ll get in super shape for a strong marathon finish. This challenge includes races in February, March, July and October.
TC Loony Challenge
If you like running a lot in a short period of time, culminating with a 10 mile, this is your challenge. The TC Loony Challenge features 19.3 miles of racing on marathon weekend, including guaranteed Medtronic TC 10 Mile entry. It is for anyone who is a little Loony!
TC Ultra Loony Challenge
If you are totally nuts, the TC Ultra Loony may appeal to you. You’ll not only run the 5k and 10k, but throw a full marathon on the end to culminate 35.5 miles of total racing on marathon weekend. Too easy. Jason Halvorson (@BigLynch55) said he liked the challenge of building endurance for the marathon, and speed for the shorter distances.
